Chemistry

For me, chemistry and art exist in continuity with one another. For example, the processes of hypothesis, reaction, and observation in chemical research are not far removed from photographing, developing, and observing in photographic practice. The gestures of working with materials, the patience to wait for a reaction to unfold, and the attitude of repeatedly observing phenomena. Standing before a flask during an experiment, I came to realize that chemistry and art reside remarkably close to one another. Since then, the concepts cultivated through chemistry have become both the foundation and the nexus of my thinking. Different elements encounter one another, reactions arise, and arrangements change. This way of seeing the world is also reflected in the name of my practice, nau. Thoughts, too, can be braided together. In doing so, they give rise to reactions that could not have existed before, allowing previously unseen aspects to quietly emerge. For me, only the field has shifted—from chemistry to people—while the underlying practice remains unchanged.
